Juan Carlos Cortés, Director of the Spanish Space Agency (AEE), has officially assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Space Agency (ESA), becoming only the second Spaniard to hold this position in the organisation’s history. His appointment marks an important milestone for Spain’s growing leadership within the European space ecosystem and reinforces the country’s strategic role in shaping Europe’s future in space.
As President of the ESA Council, Cortés will chair the Agency’s main decision-making body, working alongside ESA Member States to define strategic priorities, strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and foster innovation across the space sector. His mandate comes at a time when Europe is accelerating investment in space technologies, commercialisation and international cooperation to address emerging global challenges.
For the Spanish space ecosystem, this appointment represents a significant opportunity to increase visibility, attract investment and reinforce collaboration between institutions, industry, startups and research organisations. It also highlights Spain’s commitment to supporting innovation and entrepreneurship in one of the world’s fastest-growing technology sectors.
At ESA BIC Castilla-La Mancha, we welcome this milestone as further evidence of the momentum currently driving the Spanish space sector. By supporting innovative startups with disruptive technologies and commercial space applications, the incubation centre contributes to strengthening Europe’s innovation capacity and fostering the next generation of space entrepreneurs.
The appointment of Juan Carlos Cortés reinforces the importance of collaboration between public institutions, industry and innovation hubs to ensure that Europe remains at the forefront of the global space economy.
